July 2020 Restoration Update

American Steam Railroad’s Communications Director Brian Smith, takes you through what has been recently done on Reading 2100’s restoration. Highlights include:

  • Andy Muller and the steam crew at the Reading and Northern donated a fire door casting to 2100’s restoration. This piece will help with converting the locomotive back to coal from oil. We are very grateful for this donation and the time the R&N steam crew gave in answering our questions about Reading 2102’s restoration.
  • The red 3M reflective tape has now been completely removed from the running board skirting. Volunteers are now removing the glue residue so primer paint can be applied, so the engine will return to its as built appearance.
  • An inventory of spare parts was taken out of the storage area inside of the auxiliary water tender. The grease cellars and components for 2100 were cleaned of all oily gunk, grime, and dirt.
  • With the forging and machining of the staybolts fundraiser fully funded, thanks to your generous support, volunteers have completed the drilling tell tale process on 300 staybolts to date, with 50 staybolts having the round spherical heads formed.
